Installation of eco-friendly bio-digester systems that treat human waste efficiently, producing reusable water and biogas.

Bio-digesters replace the septic tank with an on-site treatment system that digests waste biologically, drains off reusable water, and can capture biogas. For homes and institutions where connection to a sewer is impossible or unreliable — a growing share of Nairobi's peri-urban development — a well-installed digester is cleaner, smaller and far less demanding than a conventional soakpit.

How a bio-digester works

Waste from the building flows into an airtight digestion chamber where anaerobic bacteria break down the solids. What leaves the digester is not raw effluent but largely treated water — suitable, after the system's drainage media, for percolation into the ground — and, where fitted with a gas line, biogas that can be piped to the kitchen for cooking.

Compared with a septic tank and soakpit, the digester occupies a much smaller footprint, needs no periodic exhauster visits in normal operation, and treats waste continuously rather than storing it. The biology needs the right conditions, though: it is sensitive to what enters the system, which makes correct installation and user guidance essential.

Our installation process

We size the digester from the building's actual occupancy and usage — a three-bedroom home and a twenty-occupant institution need very different systems. Excavation and placement follow the manufacturer's specifications for bedding and backfill, and the connected drainage media is built to percolate the treated water safely into the site's soil conditions.

Where the client wants biogas, we fit the gas line with proper traps and safety fittings, and commission the burner connection. Handover includes clear user guidance — what must never enter the system (harsh chemicals, sanitary items, large solids) and what to expect in the first weeks while the bacterial culture establishes.

Servicing and troubleshooting

Digesters need occasional attention: checking drainage percolation, verifying gas fittings, and occasional re-inoculation of the bacterial culture if performance dips. We offer servicing visits that keep systems at design performance.

Most digester problems trace to misuse — chemicals that killed the culture, or materials that blocked the drainage media. We diagnose which case you have, clear and restore the system, and retrain the household or facility so the failure does not repeat.
